JERSEYVILLE

George Eldon Blotna, 90, died suddenly at 6:34 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.

He was born in Macoupin County on Feb. 23, 1922, and was one of three children born to the late William and Mary (Wertz) Blotna.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country in England during World War II. It was while he was stationed there that he met his future wife, Elsie Williams.

The two married Oct. 27, 1945, in her hometown of Cheltenham, England. They shared 65 years together before her death on June 23, 2011.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge and American Legion Post 492, all of Jerseyville. He retired in 1984 after 34 years of service as the Maintenance Supervisor at Duncan Foundry in Alton.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Spernio of Jerseyville; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald (Connie) Blotna of Monmouth; four grandchildren and their spouses, Craig (Laura) Jones of Jerseyville, Cathy (Todd) Campbell of Brighton, Christen (Jeremy) Edwards of Dixon and Ashley (Drew) Colwell of Springfield; and six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Collin, Colten, Trace, Tyler and Parker.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Veronica Blotna; a son-in-law, Angelo Sperino; a sister and brother-in-law, Opal (Glen) Myers; and a brother and sister-in-law, Earl (Mary) Blotna.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, with the Rev. Dean Blackburn officiating.

Burial will be in the Tribble Cemetery near Piasa with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.

Memorials may be given to the Jerseyville American Legion Color Guard.
