Joseph Joe F. Simon, 78, of 828 S. Pearl St., died Sunday morning at Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Formerly of Cinncinati, he came to Lancaster in 1969. He was employed by Totes Inc. as a plant service manager for more than 47 years until his death.
Simon was a member of the Pearl St. United Methodist Church and worked as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, instructing a multimedia first aid course.
He was a member of the Lancaster County Fire Police Association where he served as president in 1988-1990; the Lancaster County Firemen's Association Inc.; the Pennsylvania Fire Police Association; and the Wilderness Emergency Strike Team, an association member of the Central Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association. He was also a volunteer with the Union Fire Company No. 1, an association member of the Fraternal Order of Police in Lancaster.
His Masonic affiliations included the Fort Thomas Free and Accepted Masons Lodge No. 808, the Grand Lodge of Kentucky, the Reading Lodge of Perfection, Council, Chapter and the Reading Consistory, the Ancient Arabic Order Nobels of Mystic Shrine and the Rajah Temple in Reading. He was also active in the DeMoley Masonic Organization Citizens group.
He was a member of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a former member of the Lancaster Area Retired Citizens group
He was active with the Boy Scouts for several years in Lancaster and Loveland, Ohio.
Simon was the husband of Avalea E. Hoober Simon. They were married 21 years last May. Born in Fort Thomas, Ky., he was the son of the late William F. and Minnie Draper Simon.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joan, wife of William Hill of Covington, Ky., and Joyce, wife of Robert Hartmen of Pickerington, Ohio, and two sons, Jerome 'Jerry' of Gulfport, Miss., and Joel of Baltimore; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
