Birth: Sep. 21, 1832
Waldwisse
Departement de la Moselle
Lorraine, France
Death: Jan. 13, 1916

From "Historical Plat Book of Doniphan County, Kansas" (1882):

GABRIEL GERARDY was born in 1832 in Sierck County, France; settled in this county in 1854; residence, on Section 14, Town 4, Range 21; P. O. Geary; business, farmer and stock raiser; left the city of Metz, March, 1854; landed in New Orleans in April; went from there to St. Louis, thence to Palermo; moved to his present residence April, 1857.

From "The Pierre Gerardy Family in America" by Evelyn Potter Park, 1979, p. 81:

Gabriel Nicolas Gerardy, son of Pierre Gerardy and Marguerite Nicolas, was born in the village of Waldwisse, in the canton of Sierck-les-Bains, Alsace-Lorraine, France, on September 21, 1832. He died Jan. 13, 1916, and was buried at Rosedale Cemetery, Doniphan Co., Kansas. He was married on Jan. 11, 1870, to Susan Huss, daughter of Frantz and Angeline Huss. Susan was born May 4, 1842, in the city of Luxembourg, in Luxembourg. She died June 13, 1905, at Wathena, Kansas, and was buried at Rosedale Cemetery.

Gabriel and Susan had ten children:
l. Gabriel Gerardy b . Nov. 27, 1870
2. Michael Gerardy b. May 4, 1872
3. Bernard Gerardy b. Dec. 22, 1873
4. Marie (Mary) Gerardy b. Mar. 15, 1875
5. Frank Gerardy b. Apr. 9, 1877
6. John Gerardy b. Aug. 24, 1878
7. Sophie Gerardy b. Apr. 1, 1880
8. Julia Gerardy b. Dec. 27, 1882
9. Gambetta (George) b. Oct. 5, 1884
10. Nicolas Gerardy b. May 13, 1886

The four oldest children's baptisms and dates of birth are recorded at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Atchison, Kansas. In early days priests went out on horseback to rural areas to baptize infants. Perhaps because there was no Catholic Church close enough for them to attend regularly, they later left the church.

Gabriel was the only one of Pierre's three sons who remained in Doniphan County the rest of his life, and he continued to live on his portion of the farm near Geary. Joseph Henry Gerardy, son of Gambetta and grandson of Gabriel, now (1979) lives on that same farm. When Gabriel died, equal portions of his farm were given to each child. At one time there were three houses and a blacksmith shop "on top of the hill" and the neighbors called it "French Village" for the Gerardys who were French. The children spoke only French until they started to school. Because there were so many German children in school, they also learned to speak German as well as English.
