Sarah Elizabeth (Deck) Asper was born in Franklin Co., Pa, 27 Jun 1857. She came to Kansas with her parents in 1873 and homesteaded with them 2 1/2 miles northwest of Downs. She was united in marriage with William ASPER on 23 Dec 1875. To this union were born 8 children, three of whom preceded her in departure. Her husband passed away on 31 Oct 1916.

Mrs. Asper passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ira Headley, in Downs on 25 Dec 1950 at the age of 93 years, five months, and 27 days. She was a very energetic, loving and devoted wife and mother. Since giving up her home in November of 1945 she had lived with some of her children.

She, with her husband, were charter members of the First Congregational Church in Downs, where she retained her membership the rest of her mortal life.

Mrs. Asper leaves her two daughters and three sons, all of whom were present for the last rites. They are: Mrs. Charlotte Headley of Downs; Miss Metta Asper and Aaron J. Asper of Kansas City, Mo., Clarence Asper of Ramah, Colo.; and Vern W. Asper of Simla, Colorado.

There are 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 pm Tuesday at the Congregational Church with Rev. Steve Jones in charge. Miss Judy Smith was soloist with Joanne Ramaker as pianist.

Pall bearers were C. W. Headley, Howard Headley, Glenn Headley, Marvin Headley, Alvin Asper and Bud Wilcox, all grandsons of Mrs. Asper. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

NOTE by MH: Grandma Asper told me she walked beside the wagon, driving cattle from Chambersburg, Pa to Sterling, Il {ca 750 miles}; then a few years later, walked from Sterling, Ill to Osborne Co., Ks {ca 500 miles}.
Sept 10, 2013 -
a small tornado hit the cemetery about 3 years ago and hit 3 tombstones, Charlie Headley, large Asper stone and the large Deck stone.
