Valentine Ellis
Birth: 1800, Northern Ireland
Death: Jun. 2, 1872
Potrero District
San Francisco County
California, USA

During the late 1800's, San Francisco found that with the rapid expansion of the growth of the city, cemeteries was taking up valuable land. During the 1910's, San Francisco began to pass City Ordinances to remove the current cemeteries.
During the 1920's, the Masonic and Odd Fellow's Cemeteries were removed to the Town of Lawndale (later changed to Colma in the 1940's), south of San Francisco. There were over 19,900 interred in the Masonic Cemetery. About 5600 bodies were placed in other cemeteries by relative, mostly in Woodlawn, with about 14,300 unclamed. Of about 5000 letters notifying relatives of the removal conditions, about 2500 were returned by the Post Office due to being unable to find the addresses.
Under the removal ordinance, which was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, the cemetery associations was obligated to transfer the bodies. Those not cared for by relatives would be placed in a special section of Woodlawn Cemetery. Many of the Headstones were used as fill on the approaches to the Golden Gate Bridge.
The location of Valentine Ellis is unknown, but beleived he was first buried at the Masonic Cemetery and later moved to Woodlawn Cemetery and placed in the special section and unmarked.
