James Kenneth Chapman was born in Los Angeles, California to James Chapman and Esther Ross. He grew up in Los Angeles and loved to hunt and shoot in the deserts east of Los Angeles. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was an aircraft maintenance worker. He was deployed to India. He worked for USO as a singer during the later part of the War.

When the war was over he returned home to California. He was awarded the Atwater Kent Radio Audition Award for male vocals in 1947 (including a Silver Medal).

He married Katherine Hilgenberg 18 Jan 1947 also a singer. They had three children James, Ray and Cathleen. They divorced in the mid 1950s.

He married again in the early 1960s but it ended quickly.

He worked at a hospital and met Mary V Kides who he married 22 Nov 1966. She was a Psycologist. She contracted cancer and died in Grand Junction Colorado March 1982.

He had a shop in Grand Junction where he made bullet moulds for old black powder rifles. The business was run from his garage and called Old West Bullet Moulds.

He met Dorothy Marie Scott Reedy Ranney at the Christian Science Church where he was a visiting vocal soloist. They married in Albuquerque New Mexico 7 May 1987.

Ken and Dorothy bought a home in Flora Vista, New Mexico and lived there until Ken's death from heart disease 1 Jan 2004.
