Obituary; Madison (KS) Star, 1 Jan 1897.
Mary Ann Gonter died at her home in Madison on Tuesday afternoon, December 29, 1896, aged 66 years, 10 months and 21 days, after an illness extending back over forty years. She bore her terrible suffering with patience and fortitude and during her last days was conscious that the end was near and had many times signified her willingness to leave the world which for so many years had contained for her nothing but never ending pain. She was a member of no church but had been early taught the Christian Way and although unable to attend church for many years she has lived a Christian life, her preference being the M. E. church. She leaves a husband and eight children, all grown, to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Wednesday afternoon by Rev. J. W. Funk of the Presbyterian church and Rev. W. Emerson of the M. E. church, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at No. 8. Those who knew the deceased best fully believe she now contemplates her husband and children with pitying tenderness from these realms of bliss to which her pure spirit has flown.
