Reverend John F. Briles Sr.

The Reverend John Franklin Briles Sr. of Visalia, Calif., went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1916, in LeRoy, Kan., to Noah John Briles and Lois James Briles. He attended Tabor Academy and Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan. He graduated from Fresno State University and attended the Mennonite Brethren Seminary in Fresno, Calif. He taught at Westside Elementary School and was principal of Dakota School near Kerman, Calif. He was ordained in 1953 by the American Baptist Convention at San Joaquin First Baptist Church where he pastored for 12 years. Subsequent to that he was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Avenal, Calif., for 15 years prior to joining the staff of First Baptist Church in Visalia, Calif., as an associate pastor in 1979. After retirement from that full-time pastorate in 1986, he went on to serve as a hospital chaplain and subsequently a police chaplain for the remainder of his life. Pastor Briles was a gentleman of diverse gifts and interests. Ministry to the sick, bereaved and homebound was a passion throughout his life. His love of nature, young people and outreach led to his instrumental role in the formation and establishment of Sugar Pine Christian Camps at Oakhurst, Calif. He became widely known for his ministry of making pies and giving them to numerous people he came in contact with daily, earning him the title of "Baker for the Maker." John was married to Alyce Josephine Van Scoyk in Crandall, Kan., on June 18, 1950. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maybelle Harreld and one brother, Max Briles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, John Franklin Briles Jr. of Emporia, Kan., Noah J. Briles and his wife, Fonda of Kansas City, Kan., JoAnn Briles-Klein of Wichita, Kan., and Lois Elizabeth Briles and her husband, Michael Peters, of Kansas City, Mo. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew Briles, Laura Klein and Jonathan Briles; two sisters, Betty Langshaw and husband, Lloyd and Virginia Mitchell; a brother-in-law, L.W. Harreld and a sister-in-law, Mildred Briles; extended family and innumerable friends.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Visalia, 1100 S. Sowell St. (at Tulare Avenue) in Visalia, Calif. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Crandall Cemetery near LeRoy, Kan. Arrangements are by Miller Memorial Chapel, Visalia.
