William Vonard "Bill" Brown, 84, of Fort Madison died at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at West Point Care Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1924, in Hillsboro, he was the son of Harley and Mosena Boley Brown. On Aug. 17, 1946, he married Evelyn Redden in Troy, Kan. She died April 24, 1992. He later married Harriet Holstein. She also preceded him in death.
Mr. Brown was a 1942 graduate of Fort Madison High School. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps, serving during World War II in the South Pacific Theater at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.
He was a member of Fort Madison Christian Church. He loved to read, tinker in the garage, gardening and using his riding mower to cut grass at home and at his church. He enjoyed helping people and telling stories about the old days.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Hauser of Boise, Idaho, and Connie Eicher of Fort Madison; one stepdaughter, Nancy Franklin of Eldon; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Yvonne Redden of Fort Madison; nieces; and nephews.
Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, two sons, one daughter and one stepson.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, where family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Brown will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barr Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mike McHugh officiating. Burial with military rites by Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard will be in Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison.
A memorial has been established for West Point Care Center and Lee County Health Department Hospice.
