Bill was the third child of P. H. Darter and Lena Kate McDavid Darter. He went into military service soon after the death of his mother in 1944. He was sent to Japan but luckily was on a ship headed there when the truce occurred. After return from the service, he went to work at Tennessee Eastman Co. when he met his future wife, Willa Dean Cross. They were married on December 29. 1956. They became the parents of two sons, David William and Douglas Wayne. By this time he had stopped working at eastman and went into construction which was his real calling-he was very good at this. He lived his life in Yuma, Virginia and died there on May 28, 2004 at his home with Willa Dean at his side. She passed away on their wedding anniversary on December 29, 2010.
