During the War of 1812, Purnell J. Dennis served as a Private in Colonel John McDonalds Regiment of the 2nd Ohio Militia in Ross County, Ohio. Consequently. Purnell obtained two bounty land warrants for his service; one for 40 acres and another for 120 acres of land.
Circa 1816, Purnell J. Dennis wed [1] Sarah Penniwell, and, after her death, wed [2] Sarah Baggshe The location of each wife's grave has not yet been discovered. Purnell and his forst wife, Sarah (Penniwell) Dennis, raised five children: (1) William B. Dennis (1818–1904), (2) Isaac Dennis (1829 to unknown). (3) Wesley Dennis (1833 to unknown), (4) Delilah (Dennis) Kennedy (1837–1921), and (5) Sarah Ann (Dennis) Chittum (1842–1935).
Purnell J. Dennis died on January 6, 1866, in Pickaway County, Ohio, and was interred there at Shiloh Cemetery.
