Willard Ray Hixson, 83, of Connellsville, formerly of Vanderbilt, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, in Cherry Tree Nursing Home, Uniontown. He was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Scottdale, a son of the late Alvin Scott and Eunice Sutor Hixson. Ray was a retired crane operator with Riverside Iron and Steel of Monongahela with more than 30 years of service. He was a proud veteran of the Army, serving during World War II. He was a life member of the AMVETS of Uniontown. Ray enjoyed polka dancing and loved to be around horses, which he raised and rode in local parades. Prior to his illness, Ray was an avid hunter. Ray leaves his memories to be cherished by his loving family: his three children, Charlotte Canfield, of Sparks, Nev., Debra Eggbert, of Reno, Nev., and Joel Stenger, of Mt. Pleasant; his five sisters, Zetta Ottenberg, Erma Strombeck and Rita Ottenberg, all of Rockford, Ill., Joyce Means, of Genoa, Ill., and Janet Kimmel, of Connellsville; his sister-in-law, Fern Hixson, of Scottdale; and his special niece, Shelby Herman and her husband, Bob, of Connellsville. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his son, David Hixson, Dec. 9, 2000; sister, Kathryn "Tootie" Geehring, Jan. 2, 1988; brother, Jack Hixson, July 17, 1994; and brothers-in-law, Leo Strombeck, 1993, Lester Geehring, Dec. 31, 1984, Clark Ottenberg, 2005, and David Kimmel, Sept. 17, 1994. Ray's family will greet friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Friday in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale. His funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, followed by committal services and interment in Bowman-Flatwoods Cemetery.
