Jens Peter Jensen was known as JENS PETER CHRISTENSEN when he lived in Demark. Ater he followed several of his children to Eureka, California, he changed his surname to Jensen, which was more in keeping with customs in the U.S., where fathers and their sons usually shared the same surname.
Jens and his wife, Karen, along with their two youngest daughters, Marie and Christiana, left Denmark on July 6th, 1882 on the ship, "Helkla," bound for San Francisco. They made their home in Humboldt County, first at Hydesville with their daughter, Sophie, and her husband, Peter Johnson. When Sophie and Peter moved to Eureka, Jens and Karen moved with them.
