Birth: 1812
Washington County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Nov. 1, 1842
Mineral Point
Iowa County
Wisconsin, USA

William Caffee was born in 1812, the son of James Caffee and Elizabeth Scott Caffee. He was the oldest of four boys: John Calvin b. 1813, Levi b. 1815, and Benjamin b. 1815. He and his brothers were orphaned in 1820 when both of their parents died. Little is known of William's life except he liked to drink. He was more noted for his death. In February 1842, in a small town called Gratiot's Grove, WI, William shot and killed Samuel Southwick after an arguement where Southwick pulled a knife. William Caffee was arrested, tried, and convicted of murder. On November 1, 1842 William was hung in front of a crowd of approximately 3,500 in Mineral Point, WI, next to the newly built Walker House (still standing - a hotel/restaurant). William Caffee has been named as the "ghost" who continues to haunt people staying/working at the Walker House. William's burial is unknown but it presumed to be an unmarked grave in the Old Mineral Point Cemetery, Mineral Point, WI.
