Henry Finnigan was born January 31, 1831 in Philadelphia, the son of Henry Finnigan and Nancy Ann (Smith). He had a sister, Sarah, born in 1830, a brother, William, born in 1836, and a brother John (birthdate unknown).
It is unknown when Henry and his family made their way to Jones County, Iowa, but we do know by 1860 he is living in Greenfield Township with his father Henry, and his step-mother, Charlotte Patton Finnigan.
On January 2, 1860 Henry married his first wife, Mary Ann Chamberlain in Jones County, Iowa. They had one son, Alex Henry Finnigan, and a baby girl, Nancy Ann Finnigan who died shortly after birth along with Mary Ann Chamberlain Finnigan in October, 1862.
On April 20, 1863, Henry married Vesta Veine Caffee Holden, the widow of Benjamin S. Holden. Vesta and Benjamin Holden had one son, Benjamin Percy Holden born August 4, 1860. Henry adopted Benjamin, and Vesta was step-mother to Alex Finnigan.
Henry and Vesta had several children: Edith M. Finnigan (1864-1940), Anniela June Finnigan (1866-1979), Sluny (Glory) Finnigan (b. 1870), Rennie D. Finnigan (1872-1949), and Adilla Finnigan (b. 1875).
Henry was a farmer and he and Vesta and family lived and worked on the farm for many years. Vesta later tired of the isolated living and she and Henry divorced.
On March 24, 1897, Henry married his third wife Emma Wavra (born in 1872). Henry and Emma had four children: Lillian May (b. 1898), Florence "Flossie" June (b. 1899), Nancy Pearl (1900-1981), and William Henry (1902-1989). Henry died on March 5, 1905, and was buried next to his first wife Mary Ann Chamberlain Finnigan and their infant daughter Nancy Ann.
