Hans Matheus Jung 1711-1749

To America

Hans Matteus Jung was born in Rheinland, Prussia to Johannes Jung and his wife Maria. He was the second son of this couple, the first being Marcus Jung who was born on September 20, 1705 also in Rheinland, Prussia.

When these two boys were in their 20's they boarded a ship called the Loyal Judith! This ship landed in America at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1732! Another man aboard the ship was Conrad Fey, who would later become the father-in-law of Hans Matteus Jung.

All three of the men had their names rearranged in different ways. Conrad Fey was listed as Conrad Fry, Fey, and Fay. His first name was also spelled Conradt. Hans Matteus Jung apparently went by his middle name because he was listed as Matheus. The last name of the two brothers was also rearranged from Jung to Young and Yong.

The three men left Philadelphia and moved west. Settling in Lancaster, Pa., this is where they spent the remainder of their lives. Marcus, who was a blacksmith by trade, changed his occupation to that of a merchant. Matteus became a cordwainer, and shopkeeper.

Conrad and his wife Anna Elisabeth had a daughter which they named Anna Margareta Feyin. She arrived in the colonies in 1733, and joined her father in Lancaster. There she met Matteus.

Matteus and Anna married in 1735. They started having children with the first being born in June 1736. This child was given his grandfathers name of Conrad and was baptised on June 20, 1736!

Matteus became an active member of the Moravian church. He was also on the Council for Lancaster. He is found listed in the House of Burgesses. On November 27, 1737 his wife gave birth to another son which they name Johann Jacob Jung! Then in 1738, they added a daughter whom they named Catherine Elizabeth Jung!

Next was another girl. This time in 1739 and they named her Mary Jung. On April 18, 1745 they had another boy that was named Matteus Jung. This boy died the same year. the next was a girl born March 08, 1747 named Anna Christine Jung. She also died the same year she was born.

In 1748 on August 31, they had another girl that they named Christina Jung. In 1749 they added another child which was their eighth child. However, Matteus apparently didn't live to see this child. Matteus became ill as is apparent by his wording in his will.

Matteus died on July 19, 1749! He had arranged for his brother, Marcus, to be executor of his estate. The inventory of his possessions were done by Sebastian and George Graff. At the time of his death, he was 38 years old!

It is believed that Marcus returned to his homeland to visit relatives in the early 1740's. The actual purpose of the trip is not known for certain, but believed to be to report the passing of his brother.

Marcus returned to the colonies in 1743 and went back to Lancaster. There he married Anna Christina Wolfskehlin. They were married on January 26, 1745. She was called Christina!

Christina was born on April 03, 1722 making her 17 years younger than her new husband. They had seven children. They were: Johann Mattheus, born June 24, 1746, Catharina, born November 07, 1748; Johannes, born March 07, 1751; Anna Maria born March 13, 1755; Johannes born August 09, 1757; and Johann Marcus born April 02, 1760.

Marcus lived a long life to the age of 90 years, 11 months, and 20 days. he was just shy of his 91st birthday when he died on September 09, 1796. His wife Christina lived to the age of 78. She died on September 18, 1800.

Matheus' wife, Anna Margareta, remarried on January 19, 1751 to John Hopson. She had two daughters by this marriage. First was Rebecca, on November 22, 1751. Then on December 10, 1756 she had another daughter named Elizabeth.

Rebecca grew up and married Jacob Krug. Elizabeth moved to the Lititz Sisters house and lived. She never married.

Anna Margareta Feyin Jung Hopson died on March 15, 1784 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. John Hopson died on September 20, 1804 also in Lancaster.

Three men came to the colonies in 1732. From these three men came a large contingent of descendants! From Conrad Fey and his wife came Matteus' wife. They had children. Marcus also married and produced children.
