Vermont Phoenix 11 Jan 1889: "This personal item is from the Rutland Herald:
"Father P. Long, who is to succeed Father Coffey as assistant to Father
Gaffney, is in Brattleboro on a short visit to his parents."
VP 25 Jan 1889: "This personal item of local interest is from the
Rutland Herald of last Saturday: Father Patrick Long of Brattleboro, who
was recently appointed assistant to Father Gaffney, was ordained a priest
only last December. He is 26 years old, a native of Brattleboro, and his
father, Daniel Long, resides there now with his family. Father Long
studied four years at St. Mary's College in Baltimore, one year in the
Troy seminary, and studied theology in the Great Seminary at Montreal
three years and a half. He was ordained there on the 22d of last
December, and has just entered upon the duties of his first appointment."
VP 26 Apr 1889, Personal: "Says the Rutland Herald: "Rev. Father Long
preached the Easter sermon at St Luke's church. Father Long presents an
extremely youthful appearance in the pulpit, but his natural eloquence
and studied discourses predict a bright future for the youthful orator."
From StAugustine's:
In 1893, St. Dominic was founded in Proctor with Rev. Patrick J. Long first resident pastor. In July of 1915, Father Patrick J. Long was assigned to St. Augustine's from St. Dominic's Parish in Proctor. During his six years at St. Augustine's, Father Long - who was born in Brattleboro and ordained in Montreal - made many improvements to the school, church and rectory. He also paid off the remaining debt on the new church structure. It is said that one of father Long's many talents was financial management. When he became pastor in 1915, the parish was still paying for its new church and maintaining its school and convent on Court Street. Through his work and managerial skills, he left St. Augustine's financially stable and in a position to plan for school and convent improvements. These were completed shortly after his departure.
Peter Giuliani, whose family arrived in Montpelier in 1912, remembers Father Long as "a priest of the old school; never any doubt about anything, very dedicated to his calling and very strict."
In 1921, Father Long was re-assigned to St. Mary's Parish in Fair Haven. According to a 1943 parish history prepared for the Knights of Columbus annual convention that year, a "magnificent, city-wide Farewell Reception" was held for Father Long in city Hall.
Father Long's re-assignment was announced on Saturday, August 13, 1921
