BENIGHT - John McD Benight, beloved husband of Elizabeth M. Benight and father of Mrs. John E. Davis and H.W. Benight, Dec. 25.
Daily Inter Ocean, Chicago, IL Dec. 27, 1892
John McD. Benight, for eighteen years a resident of Chicago and of Wilmette during the last eight years, died at the Grand Hotel, Janesville, Wis., Sunday, Dec. 25. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia, though he had never recovered from a severe attack of the grip two years ago. Mr. Benight came to Chicago in 1867, and soon afterward entered into the employ of J.V. Farwell & Co. as a traveling salesman. Subsequently he became connected in the same capacity with Eddy, Harvey & Co., Phelps, Dodge & Palmer, and James S. Harvey. His business took him into every State in the Union, and made him a host of friends and acquaintances by whom his death will be sincerely mourned. He was nearly 62 years of age, and was born in Vigo County, near Terre Haute, Ind., from which place he moved to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1854. In 1855 he married Elizabeth May, who survives him. He leaves one daughter, the wife of John M. Davis, of the firm of H.H. Latham & Co. Mr. Benight had been an active worker for many years in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon in the First Church, Wilmette, by the Rev. H. Leonard, the pastor, and others. The remains will be sent to Champaign, where three children and two grandchildren lie buried.
