The death of Mr. Nicholas D. Jaques took place in Des Moines last Thursday after a number of months of ill health due to pernicious anemia. The remains were brought to Jefferson on Saturday and the funeral services were held from the M.E. church on Sunday afternoon. Interment took place in the Jefferson cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by old friends and neighbors, in spite of the rainy weather.
Besides his immediate family, Mr. Jaques leaves to mourn his departure, one sister and four brothers; Mrs. Esther Porter, of Rapid City, S.D.; John Jaques of Curtis, Oklahoma; Thomas Jaques of Springview, Nebraska; and William and Benjamin F. Jaques, both of Jefferson; also a half brother and sister residing near Hamilton, Canada. Of his relatives there were present at the funeral, his wife, his daughter, Laeta, and his two brothers residing. Mr. Jaques was a member of the M.E. church at Jefferson, having united therewith by letter in the year 1895.
Nicholas D. Jaques, son of Thomas and Margaret Jaques, was born near Hamilton, Canada, July 17, 1842, and departed this life in Des Moines, Iowa, December 3rd, 1914, aged 72 years, 4 months and 16 days. In 1865 he went to California where he resided until 1869, when he returned to Canada. In 1870 Mr. Jaques came to Greene County, Iowa and settled in Willow township. He was a pioneer in this county, having built the first house to be erected in Willow township. He left his farm 14 miles southwest of Jefferson, twenty years ago to reside in Chicago where he remained for three years. In March 1882 he was united in marriage near Clinton, Iowa, to Miss Kate Ross. To this union two daughters were born, the younger dying in infancy and his daugher Laeta remaining to mourn his loss. In 1906 Mr. Jaques suffered the loss of his wife by death. On May 11, 1914, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Joseph LeGore, who survives him.
