Mary Anna Meeker was born in Tacoma, and raised in Puyallup, WA. She was 13 years old when her mother took Anna and her sister Grace to Redlands, CA to care for their brother Ray. Anna was musically talented. Her sister Grace wrote her grandfather on October 16, 1913, "Did you get the paper with the account of Anna's piece in it? Anna is doing well with her music. She is going away to take a special course. The expense will be very hard on the folks. In the end it will pay as she can teach and command a good price."
Anna went to San Diego, where she took the Dunnings course in Music. Her father wrote, "Will take her six weeks and then she will be fitted for teaching. She had several scholars in the early summer but could not use the Dunning System. She seems to have the nack of teaching and of holding her pupils as they are all coming again as soon as she gets back. The course costs by the time she gets back almost $300.00 which includes her living expenses. My but I have scrimped to save up the money for this. She will be fitted to earn her way and a good deal more so it's O.K." In December 1913 the family moved to San Bernardino, CA and Anna finished her music course. On February 27, 1914 her father wrote, "I wish you could hear Anna play—she is quite a musician." A year later Anna was teaching piano to 16 pupils. She was then 20 years old.

There is only one letter from Anna Meeker in the Meeker collection. It was written from San Bernardino on August 17, 1915.

Dear Grandfather
I don't see why mother ever thought of me coming up there as she knows she would not let me go when the time came. It would be a great chance to see the fair but from a business point of view I would be very foolish to even consider coming as I can and do get $1 one dollar an hour for teaching piano. [She is referring to the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. Her grandfather Ezra Meeker was working in the Washington State Building.]You don't know how proud I was to get your letter. It was the first I ever received from you even if I am old enough to vote. Now grandfather do write me one of those lovely birthday letters like dad gets when the 26th of July comes again. We are all so concerned about Father who is suffering from poison oak. His face is all swelled up and he looks so funny we can't help laughing--poor man yet so sorry as we know he suffers a lot. Maybe shall get to see you this summer. Hoping this letter finds you well and happy. I remain as ever
Your loving granddaughter
