Lida Mae Johnston Bates Ackerman, 90, of Moncks Corner, SC, died Saturday evening at her residence.

Her funeral will be 1:00 PM Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2013, in the Pinopolis United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Biggin Cemetery directed by DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER.

The family will receive friends at the CHURCH from 11:30 AM until the hour of service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Pinopolis United Methodist Church, PO Box 521, Pinopolis, SC 29469.

Mrs. Ackerman was born December 29, 1922, in Georgetown, SC, a daughter of Thomas Eugene Johnston and Eva Mae Rowell Johnston.

She was a member of the Pinopolis United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher and youth counselor. Mrs. Ackerman used to teach Sunday school in her car prior to there being facilities in which to hold class. She was very active in her church and loved her church family. She also once held an office in the Women's Society of Christian Service. Mrs. Ackerman worked at the Ft. Sumter Hotel in Charleston when they were taken over by the enemy, and actually participated in sending and receiving "coded" messages.

Mrs. Ackerman received only A's while attending school, and she enjoyed reading and gardening.

She was preceded in death by a brother, T.E. Johnston, and a sister, Mary Jacquelyn Johnston. Mrs. Ackerman was the widow of W.J. Bates and M.L. Ackerman, Jr.

Surviving are, a daughter, Susan M. Ackerman of Charleston; two sons, William J. Bates and his wife, Cheryl, of Charleston, and Martin L. Ackerman, III, of Moncks Corner; a sister, Marguerite J. Worsham of Florence; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth G. "Pete" Johnston of Moncks Corner; three grandchildren, Amy B. (Jason) Winfield of Hickory, NC, Lauren B. (Stephen) Lynn of Atlanta, GA, and Elliott B. (Paul) Cooper of Charleston; and four great grandchildren, Miller Lynn, Henry Winfield, Bennett Winfield, and Robert Winfield.
