William James "J.W." Bennett
Birth: Dec. 2, 1846
Highland Home
Crenshaw County
Alabama, USA
Death: Aug. 11, 1920
Lavaca County
Texas, USA

He served as Deputy Sheriff and was elected to the offices of Sheriff, and Tax Collector in Lavaca county, Texas from 1870 to 1892. During this time he tracked down a murder, Indian Pocket and brought him to trail; he brought in the Campbell boys for murder, and then risked his life as he fought off a large mob that eventually hanged the boys. Six months later, he faced another mob of 200 men at the jail demanding the release of Monroe Harrison, who had shot the area constable. He refused and Harrison stood trail for the crime. He was returning to the courthouse, when he was told that Ben Stoner was looking for him and intended to shoot him. He borrowed a pistol from the district clerk. As he walked outside, Stoner who was on horseback was holding his gun away from view. Stoner fired; striking him above the right ear inflicting only a slight wound. He shot back and Stoner who toppled dead off his horse. He was also the owner of a cattle ranch of 3,000 acres, and two farms near Hallettsville. Additionally he was the President of the Lavaca County National Bank.
