Death of Pioneer Woman

Mrs. Sarah Jane Branigin who died yesterday and whose funeral will take place from Young's Creek church, Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock, was born at Floyd's fork, Jefferson County, KY, March 11, 1826. Her parents were David and Cassandra Pritchard Forsyth, who emigrated to Johnson County in November, 1826, and she grew to womanhood on the old homestead, one mile North of Nineveh.
Deceased was married to Nicholas Branigin, Feb. 5, 1842. He was born in Kentucky in 1818, and came to this county with his parents in 1836 and settled in Blue River township. They lived a happy married life until the death of Mr. Branigin, May 13, 1902, a period of over sixty years.
They located in Blue River township where Nicholas Branigin became prominent in politics and was elected to the office of county commissioner from the first district for the years 1870-72.
To these pioneer parents five sons were born: Edmund, William, Amos, Emery and Oscar. Edmund died at the age of fifty-three years and Amos at the age of three. In addition to the three sons who survive are fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, one brother, David Forsyth, and two half brothers, Elkanah and Andrew Forsyth.
For a number of years past, decease had resided in Franklin at her home on South Main street where every care was given her. Her health had been extremely frail of late and about ten days ago she was taken to the home of her son, W.D. Branigin at Edinburg where her life quietly passed away.
Mrs. Branigin was a member of the Primitive Baptist church. She was a real pioneer woman of strong sturdy Christian character. Her chief joy was to help others and she will always be remembered for her unbounded, unselfish hospitality. Her life was sweet to all those who came within her influence and her death is cause for real mourning to her many descendants and friends.
The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. T.A. Childs, long a near neighbor. Burial in Greenlawn beside the remains of her husband.
