Curtis called Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee home. He was assigned to Company L, 120th Infantry Regiment, 60th Infantry Brigade, 30th Division. He participated in one unit campaign: the Ypres-Lys Offensive in Belgium. It was during this offense near Lankof Farm in Flanders, Belgium that Curtis was shot in the stomach and died before they could get him to the aide station. He was 19 years old and the younger brother of Ernest Monte Vista Memorial Gardens that was Killed in Action on 29 September 1918. They now rest side by side.
