Hobart (also known as Hobert) called Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee home. He enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard in Johnson City on 20 June 1916. Private Jones was assigned to Company F, 3rd Infantry Regiment (Tennessee) and his training began.
After the United States declared war on Germany, 6 April 1917, the 3rd was redesignated the 117th Infantry Regiment and assigned to the 30th Division. Still with Company F, Hobert was dispatched with them to Camp Sevier, South Carolina to continue their training and to be integrated into the Division.
Hobart was promoted to Sergeant on 25 July 1917.
Hobart was the son of William Henry and Mary Ann Jones.
