Arlie enlisted in the United States Army on 3 January 1949. He was assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division.
Arlie was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea during the first Battle of the Naktong Bulge on 10 August 1950 and presumed/declared dead on 31 December 1953.
The First Battle of Naktong Bulge was an engagement between United States and North Korean forces early in the Korean War, 5–19 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan (Yeongsan, Changnyeong County) and the Naktong River in South Korea. It was a part of the Battle of the Pusan Perimeter and was one of several large engagements fought simultaneously. The battle ended in a victory for the United States after large numbers of reinforcements destroyed an attacking North Korean division.
Arlie was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Arlie also has a memorial marker at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tennessee.
