Nelson graduated Science Hill High School, Class of 1941. He enlisted in the United States Navy on 27 August 1942 in Nashville, Tennessee with service number 6403068.

Nelson received training as an Aviation Machinist's Mate and sailed from San Francisco, California to Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 21 February 1943 aboard the USS Henderson (AP-1). He arrived Pearl on 2 March.

Nelson went missing on an air mission off the coast of Florida on 17 April 1945. His aircrew was flying anti-submarine patrols. It is believed that they encountered a German U-Boat and during that engagement the U-Boat shot them down.

Nelson's the son of Lulet Forest "Buss" Andrews and Mary Ruth Lusk. His younger brother Lee also served in the United States Navy during World War II.
