ALBANY, NY — Frank Adamowicz, 100, most recently of Albany and formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Albany County Nursing Home.
He was born Dec. 1, 1899, in Dickson City, Pa., the son of Anthony and Frances Adamowicz.
He married Julia Jezierski on Nov. 3, 1920. She died on Dec. 12, 1955.
Frank attended school in Dickson City, and at the age of 14 went to work in the coal mines. He also played semi-pro baseball and was an exceptional player, winning the title of Home Run Champion for the state of Pennsylvania. He was made offers by two major league teams but turned them down due to the birth of his daughter, Irene.
In 1944, Frank and his family moved to Oneonta. He went to work for the city of Oneonta, and became the sewage plant operator, a position he held until 1971, when he was forced to retire because of his age.
Concurrently, while working for the city, Frank ran his own business as a stone mason on his off duty time. He continued this after his retirement, well into his late 80s.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta and a former member of the Oneonta Eagles Aerie #1260.
He is survived by his son, Gerald H. Adamowicz of East Chatham; three grandchildren, Beth Jorns of Omaha, Neb., Gerald K. Adamowicz of Portland, Ore., and Jennifer Miller of Allentown, Pa. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Chelsey and Courtney Adamowicz and Jennifer and Brittany Jorns.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Irene Adams in 1995.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call on Saturday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.
