Florence Mary Minshall was my dearest beloved grandmother. She was born to James Abram and Bertha Adelia (Jones) Minshall on March 1, 1906 in Bloomfield, Wisconsin. At the age of three she lost her mother to complications from a pregnancy. Florence had an older brother, James Minshall and a younger sister, Alene Rebecca Minshall. She also had an older half-brother, Russell Cole, from her mother's first marriage. After their mother's death, their father's younger sister, Elva Minshall came to live with them and help care for the children. In the early winter of 1911 the family was out ice skating at a small lake when their house caught fire and burned to the ground. The family lost everything and it was then that their father had to separate the children with different relatives while he went west to South Dakota to find work. Before James could reunite the family, he passed away after a brief illness in McLaughlin, South Dakota in 1915. Florence was raised by her father's eldest sister, Hannah Rebecca (Minshall) Harrington & George L. Harrington in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Florence attended Elkhorn High School and after graduation left for Chicago to attend the Presbyterian Hospital Nursing School where her elder step-sister, Mary Electa Harrington had previously attended. While at nursing school Florence met and married Dr. John Alden Harrison. They made their home initially in Rockford, Illinois and later moving to Pecatonica, Illinois where Dr. Harrison set up practice. They had a daughter, Barbara Jean Harrison in 1929. In the early 1950's the family moved to San Diego, California and after Dr. Harrison's time served with the U.S. Navy they made their home in La Jolla, California. Dr. Harrison was in private practice there for more than 20 years.

My grandmother was extremely talented, she played the violin and the piano. She was an amazing seamstress and knitter, she made beautiful dance recital and Halloween costumes for her daughter Barbara. She was also a very talented artist. Florence Mary Minshall Harrison passed away from a heart attack while living in Oceanside, California on July 5, 1983. She is buried in the Minshall Family plot next to her sister, Alene Rebecca Minshall at Hazel Ridge Cemetery in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

Pansies were my grandmother's favorite flower. She was beautiful, inside and out and I adored her. I miss my grandmother every day of my life.
