Rev. Mary E. McGawn

HOWE - Rev. Mary E. McGawn, 57, of South Twin Lake, Howe, Ind., died Friday, May 18, 2012, at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. Rev. McGawn was born on March 13, 1955, in South Bend, Ind., to Donald R. and Wanda M. (Potter) McGawn, who both preceded her in death. Growing up in New Carlisle, Ind., she moved from there to LaGrange County in 1979 to work for Lakeland Middle School. Rev. McGawn was a graduate of Indiana University South Bend where she obtained both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. She was a special education and social studies teacher at Lakeland Middle School from August 1979 until her retirement in June 2010. Rev. McGawn was a member and served the Howe United Methodist Church from 1990 until 2009. In 1997 she was ordained by the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church and did her post-graduate work at United Methodist seminaries. She had also been an ordained deacon with the United Methodist Church and was under appointment at Lakeland Middle School and Howe United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Indiana Conference United Methodist Church and was very active in the ministries of the LaGrange First Church of God. Rev. McGawn was also a member of the LaGrange County Indiana Genealogical Society, Historic New Carlisle, Ind., and Howe Community Association. Surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Chuck DeMeyer of New Carlisle, Ind., Kathy and Kenny Sherry of Granger, Ind., and Donna and Randy Vermillion of New Carlisle, Ind.; a stepmother, Barbara McGawn of New Carlisle, Ind.; eight nieces and nephews, Don DeMeyer, Dan DeMeyer, Meg Buss, Kristin Sherry, Kevin Sherry, Karen Boschee, Ryan Vermillion and Missy Wise; a great-nephew, Nick Boschee; and five great-nieces, Shauna and Cora Buss, Ella and Kate Boschee, and Tori DeMeyer; two aunts and several cousins. Funeral services will be held for Rev. McGawn today, May 22, 2012, at 11:00 am at LaGrange First Church of God, 777 N. Detroit St., LaGrange, IN, with Rev. Brian VanOsdol. A graveside service will be held at Galien Township Cemetery in Galien, Mich. Visitation was held on Monday, May 21, 2012, from 4-8 pm at the Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange, IN. Memorials may be made to LaGrange First Church of God, 777 N. Detroit St., LaGrange, IN 46761; or to Historic New Carlisle, P.O. Box 107, New Carlisle, IN 46552.
