SOUTH BEND - Joseph C. Clardy Jr., 91, of South Bend, died at 9:10 pm Monday at Ironwood Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness. He was born on August 31, 1921, in Marion, Alabama, the son of J.C. and Ruth Clardy; both parents preceded in death. He married Lucille White on November 22, 1941, in Mishawaka. They had two daughters, Jo Ann (Paul) Lamirand and Bonnie Kay Horvath, both of Mishawaka. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Paige (Drew) Smith of Granger, Troy Horvath of Elkhart and April Horvath of South Bend; along with four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Isabella Horvath, Wyatt and Scarlett Smith, all of Granger. Joseph is also survived by 3 sisters, Lilly M. Herron of Granger, Ottie Nell Guthrie of Angola, IN, and Mavis Rose of Mishawaka. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. Clardy of Florence, AL, and Hubert "Billy" of Virginia Beach, VA. Mr. Clardy worked at Studebaker Corp., both before and after World War II. He held several positions, including supervisory duties at management level. He also was employed at Oliver and at Wheelabrator-Frye corporations. He was active in Masonic organizations in both Mishawaka and Osceola, and as a member of Shriners, York Rite. Mr. Clardy spent a total of 38 years in military service. He entered officer candidate training in 1943, and thereafter served on active duty with the Army Air Corps during WW II. He was stationed in Madison, WI, Wilmington, NC, and Waterboro, SC, before serving in England in the European theater until the war's end. He served in the Air Force Reserves as a member of the 434th Tactical Air Wing at both Bakalar Air Force Base, Columbus, IN, and at Grissom Air Force Base, Bunker Hill, IN, where he served as base fire chief. He retired in 1981. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, December 6th, from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 pm in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. A service of Christian Burial celebrating Joseph's life will be held at 11:00 am, with one hour of visitation prior on Friday, December 7, 2012, in the funeral chapel, with Dr. David Miller officiating.

Burial is to follow at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.
