Found Dead in Bed,
Sylvan Beach, Sept. 28. — Eli H.
Dyer, aged 76 years, a veteran of the
Civil War, was found dead in bed in
his room at the Lehigh Hotel, Sylvan
Beach, this morning. It is believed
that heart trouble was the cause of
death. He was born in Otsego county
and had lived at Sylvan Beach for
the past 30 years. He was a carpenter
by trade but retired from active
work several years ago. At the outbreak
of the CIVIL War he enlisted in
Company F. l21st Regiment, and saw
considerable service in the army. He
is survived by one son, Austin Dyer
of Oneonta. A grandson, William
Dyer, resides in Rome. His wife
died about 15 years ago. Coroner M.
T. Powers of Rome was called.

Enlisted as a 28 year old on 12 August 1862 in Burlington, Otsego, New York into the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry, later also referred to as "Upton's Regulars." Mustered into Captain Nelson O. Wendell's Co. F. on 23 August at Camp Schuyler, near Herkimer County, New York.
Saw initial action in the Antietam Campaign and then in December was in the battle for Fredericksburg, where the union forces were replused. Went into winter camp across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg in Stafford County at White Oak Church. It was here on 12 January 1863 that he was discharged, due to medical reasons.
On 13 October 1909 he was admitted to the Soldiers Home in Bath, Steuben County, New York where he was in residency until 4 October 1910. He was suffering from heart trouble. The contact person was his son Austin, who resided at the time in Oneonta, New York.
