Colonel Baker attended Louisburg College before receiving a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1960. He retired as the Industrial Engineer Manager for Eaton Corporation of Selma in 1994 after 34 years of faithful employment. Maylon was a longtime active member of the Selma Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and choir member. Always very active in his community, he was a member and past-president of the Lion's Club and was currently a longtime member and former chairman of the Selma Housing Authority. Mr. Baker has also been an active member of the Johnston County Health Board since 1994.
Maylon entered the Army National Guard on March 22, 1951. He was assigned to a training unit in Fort Jackson, SC. Later he was assigned to Far East Command 8th Army and I-Corp/Arty. in Tokyo, Japan. Colon Baker received the President's Meritorius Service Medal and two Army Commendation Medals. Colonel Baker retired in 1991 after 40 years of loyal service in the Army National Guard.
Maylon is survived by his wife Patricia Gayle Baker of Princeton; three children, Mark Thomas Baker of Four Oaks, Catherine Baker Matthews and husband Robin of Smithfield, Susan Baker Brown and husband Scott of Benson; stepson Greg Davis of Princeton; one brother Derward Baker and wife Myrtas of Cary; one sister, Betty Baker Turner and husband Bill of Yanceyville. He also leaves to cherish his memory three grandchildren Nicholas Matthews, Virginia Brown and Jordyn Brown.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 7 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial with military honors will be in Selma Memorial Gardens.
