Two months after his wife's death in June of 1864, Bolivar enlisted in the C.S. Army in Company L, Fifteenth Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment. However, he soon became ill and died in a hospital in Montgomery on 8 October 1864 leaving his three children, ages thirteen, twelve, and four to be raised by members of his wife's family.
