"In the latter part of the sixteenth century a French Huguenot named Bonifant moved to Scotland on account of religious persecution. His Christian name is not known. He had a son, Luke, who may or may not have come to America, a point not definitely settled. Luke had a son, Gregory (born about 1726), who came to America very young and settled in Maryland near the present site of Georgetown, D.C."

"Mathew Maddox [wrote of the Bonifields] ... in June 1848: 'These Bonnifields were a dark people; black, straight hair; large bridged noses; generally tall, large, stout men to lift but not very active; peaceable, good citizens and very industrious farmers."
