Lawrence A. "Larry" Wadkins

Larry Wadkins, 96, a longtime Wenatchee resident, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at home. He was born in Spokane County on February 21, 1914, to Rutherford B. and Bessie (Bullard) Wadkins, the youngest of five children. Larry graduated from Mead High School in 1932, and attended Whitworth College. He then went on to graduate from Eastern Washington College. He taught school in Rosalia until he was drafted in June 1941. He served four and a half years in the U.S. Army, seeing action in France and Germany and was discharged in January 1946. After leaving the Army, he used the G.I. Bill to attend Washington State College and received a degree in Wildlife Management. He then went to work for the Department of Game in Sprague, WA and in 1960, was transferred to Wenatchee. As a Wildlife Biologist, some of his work involved transplanting Mountain Goats, Sea Otters and Big Horn Sheep. Following retirement in 1977, his interest in game continued as a volunteer with the Wenatchee Sportsman's Association, developing wildlife habitat, natural springs, building and maintaining feeders in Chelan and Douglas County. He was an accomplished cabinet maker and talented woodworker, also enjoying backpacking, hiking and bird hunting, especially quail and grouse.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings; and one son, Terry.
