Dr. Joseph Friend, a physician and druggist of the West End Drug Store in Fort Smith, Arkansas, was the son of Benard and Minnie Friend(both were born in Mississippi). Dr. Friend worked in a drug store since he was 11 years old.
Dr. Friend was educated at the University of Mississippi and the University of New York. He received his medical degree in New York, New York; and practiced medicine there until he gave up the practice of medicine and came to Fort Smith, Arkansas.
It was in Fort Smith that he established his drug store. He was a man who experimented with formulas and studied "catarrah of the stomach." He produced a remedy that was said to have "effected wonderful cures in this connection."
Dr. Friend married Jennie Lillian Dooley (the daughter of James Dooley of Oxford, Mississippi).
Dr and Mrs. Friend had three children: Max William(who was on the ship Tuscania when it was sunk by a German submarine, but he was picked up by an English convoy; Oscar Jerome Friend(who worked with his fahter in the drug store business; and Alice Virginia Friend.
No other information can be found on Dr. Friend.
