Fort Dodge Messenger, April 13, 1926
Philip Bowen, a veteran of the Civil war, died Monday afternoon at his home, 520 Fourth avenue south, following an illness of several days with pneumonia. Mr. Bowen was eighty three years of age, and had been a resident of Fort Dodge for the past twenty-five years. He served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865 as Corporal of Company I, First regiment of Wisconsin Cavalry, serving under Grant and Sherman. Mr. Bowen was employed as foreman of tracks for the Illinois Central railroad, retiring on a pension after forty years' service. He is survived by his widow and nine children. They are Alice and Mary Bowen, living at home, Kathryn, Mrs. Edward Taylor and Martha, Mrs. James McIntyre of Fort Dodge, Nell, Mrs. George Dillon and William Bowen of Cherokee, Margaret, Mrs. George Williams of Des Moines, Philip H. Bowen of this city, and Daniel from California, all of whom with the exception of the latter were with him at his death. Funeral services will take place Wednesday morning at 9:00 o'clock from Sacred Heart church with the Rev. Father Desmond officiating. Burial will be made in the Corpus Christi cemetery.

Philip Bowen married Nora O'Connell, the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Regan) O'Connell at Waverly, Bremer County, Iowa on December 21, 1866. The service was held at St. Marys Church in Waverly by Father Shields.

The 1900 US census shows Philip (58) and Nora (50), married 32 years with children Dan (29), Alice (21), Margaret (19) and Martha (17) living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was a section Foreman for the Illinois Central Railway. The record indicates Philip was born in 1842 in Ireland and that he came to America in 1846, having been here for 54 years.

Philip Bowen's death certificate shows he was born December 25, 1842 in Ireland. His father's name is Daniel. He died on April 12, 1926 at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was a retired railroad employee who lived at 520 4th Avenue South in Fort Dodge with his wife Nora Bowen.

His early years in America are uncertain. Family records indicate he and his siblings were orphaned and raised by different aunts and uncles in Wisconsin. It is here that young Philip joined the Wisconsin Volunteers in 1862.
