Beulah Willie Yerkes was a "Society girl," the daughter of St Louis printer and publisher, Elias Conway Yerkes, (b: Little Rock, AR 20 Oct 1856; d:15 Feb 1925) and Cora Justine Porter of Johnson County, AR (b:22 Mar 1855; d: St Louis 2 Feb 1949).
Born in Little Rock Arkansas, Beulah married Joe Bates Drane Sr in St Louis Missouri at the home of her parents on 9 Aug 1905. She and Joe honeymooned at Niagra Falls, then made their home in Marietta GA. Later they moved to Macon where four of their five children, Clifford Conway, Beulah Elizabeth, Helen Wesley, and Virginia Justine were born. By 1917 they were back in St Louis where their youngest, Joe Bates Jr was born. In 1926, Beulah and the children moved to Houston, TX, to join husband Joe who'd gone there in search of work. Their relocation to Houston also provided a successful search for specialty medical care for daughter Virginia. They lived first in the Heights of Houston and then settled on Tidwell Road in 1942, where Beulah kept house for many of the rest of her 86 years. She was the matriarch of the Drane family, rearing five talented, successful children.
Beulah moved to Bellaire TX in 1964 to be near the care of son Joe. There she continued her care for the children of her eldest son Clifford who had died in a fall from a horse in 1959. She passed in 1967 of pneumonia while in the home and care of her eldest daughter Elizabeth, in River Oaks in Houston. Beulah was sharp and commanding of herself to the end of her days.
