During World War One, he served in the RAF and was shot down by Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron.

In 1931 he saved the Embassy Theatre from being converted into a cinema and then produced over a hundred plays there

When World War Two broke out in 1939, he served his country as a RAF radar controller.

(1951), Martin Luther (1953), BBC Sunday-Night Theatre (TV series), Reach for the Sky (1956) as Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, Lust for Life (1956), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), Adventures of a Jungle Boy (TV series) as Dr. Lawrence, The Crime of the Century (TV series) as Asst. Commissioner Relf, Carry on Constable (1960), The Haunting (1963), The Massingham Affair (TV series) as Mr. Paget, Sherlock Holmes (TV series), The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970 TV Mini-series) as Cardinal Campeggio, Zeppelin (1971), Casanova (1971 TV Mini-series), Freewheelers (TV series), The Ruling Class (1972) with Peter O'Toole, and Columbo (TV series).
