OBITUARY: Keota Eagle, approx Aug 10, 1878. "DIED - Another old landmark has been removed from Dutch Creek, in the person of Mr. James Beatty (sic), who died Wednesday evening and buried in the Moravian cemetery, Thursday at 4pm. Father Beatty was born in Preston Co, WV in 1802, came to Iowa and settled in D. C. (Dutch Creek) in 1856, and has resided there most of the time since, except 3 years he spent in Lafayette Twp, Keokuk Co. He raised a family of 9 children, 3 boys and 6 girls, 8 of whom are still living. He has been a member of the M. E. church (Methodist Episcopalean) for many years, was kind and good to his family and neighbors, just one of that rare class of men who appear to try to do all the good possible. He had no enemies. He was sensible to the last and expressed his readiness "to step on the boat at any time." His disease was hemorrage of the lungs. Dr. Wallace treated him, and the friends wish us to thank him for his untiring zeal professionally. Rev Herbst preached the funeral sermon."

James is a farmer, No RE, PE = $200.
Why he is buried in a Moravian cemetery is somewhat a mystery. His obituary indicated "He has been a member of the M. E. church (Methodist Episcopalean) for many years". He did, however, appear to live in the area of this church.
The family's surname was variously spelled, even by the children of James. Although his obituary showed 2 "t's", his headstone had 1 "t", and his daughter Huldah spelled the name with one "t".
