Joseph was in the Civil War, Company E, 47th Ohio Volunteers. Wounded foot and Heat Stroke during an infantry march in Georgia during the Civil War. Also, he was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis contracted in the line of duty and was given a medical discharge on 9 May 1865. He died of "Brain Fever".
