John Michael and Susan had 7 children, six boys and one girl. Only two, George James and Herman John lived to adulthood. One was stillborn (J.M); Alfred lived 6 months and died from inflammation of the brain; Margarethe Marie lived 4 days; Edward J and Joseph Leo were 2 and 5 at the time of their deaths, 6 days apart, both dying of Diphtheria. Susan was so protective her only living child at the time, George James that she sent him away from the home. Their only surviving children, George and Herman John were 12 years apart in age.
