Martha was born on June 22, 1786 at McConnel's Station, 1.5 miles south of Lexington, KY to John McConnel and Elizabeth Young McConnel. While she was born in KY it was only a stop over for her parents on their way from PA to OH.
She married John Hemphill on Dec. 10, 1818, in Ross Co., Concord Twp., OH by Rev. James Dickey, Minister.
It is related that Martha learned the art of herb doctoring from the local Indians in Ross Co. and was called on by the union forces during the Civil War as she knew the Indian cure for blood poisoning.
They were very strict Presbyterians in their religious practices and very devout. They were also musical people who went about their daily chores with a song on their lips and they passed this on from generation to generation.
After John died Martha moved to Logan Co., OH, near Belle Center where the family grew up and married. Martha lived with her son Franklin in Ford Co., IL until her death.
