His first wife Frances "Fannie" was the mother of his children. She died in 1904 of abdominal cancer, she is buried in Gross Springs cementery in Jackson county AL in a grave marked only with a rock. Gross springs cementery was the Christopher family cementery, it has several graves but only a few with tombstones. Sumpter's sister Mary Anderson Christopher has several family members buried there. It is now on private property near the edge of the Flat Rock and Higdon communities
