CLEARY, FORMER WINFIELD TRUSTEE, DIES

WINFIELD -- Former Winfield Trustee Gerald "Jerry" Cleary, 54, died Tuesday at his Glen Ellyn home. He lived in Winfield for 15 years and also in the Wheaton and Carol Stream area.
Cleary was a member of the Winfield village board for four years, serving as village treasurer from 1971 to 1975 under village President Robert Lee.
"Jerry was a precise guy, very quiet but always had a joke to tell," Lee said. "He was the one who kept an eye on the budget as we didn't have a heck of lot of money in those days. He had calming effect on the board when things got blustery and they got pretty hectic at times."
Bill Schibur, who served as village trustee with Cleary, described him as a fun-loving guy.
"He was a good, conscientious trustee," Schibur said. "He never took his polities so seriously that he could not compromise."
Cleary, born in Bloomington, was a former president of the Wheaton Jaycees and Republican Party. He was a member of the Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity at the University of Illinois, Champaign, and a 1st lieutenant in the Army and a veteran of the pre-Korean conflict.
He was an accountant with Spraying systems of Wheton, formerly with Container Corp. of America in Chicago and Arthur Anderson.
Cleary is survived by his wife, Jacqueline of Glen Ellyn; a daughter, Cassandra Cleary of Glendale Heights; stepchildlren, John a Hedstrom Jr. of West Chicago, Scott W.(Kristina) Hedstrom of Seattle, Wash. and Jill M. Hedstrom of West Chicago; a granddaughter, Karen L. Hedstrom; his mother Alpha Cleary of El Paso, IL and a sister Betty(Paul) Kopecky of Los Altas, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Cleary.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight, Aug 30 at Leonard Memorial Home Ltd., 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug 31, at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald H. Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be private at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of DuPage, 22W600 Butterfield Rd., Suite 101 Glen Ellyn, Ill. 60137.
