JOE BENES Gonzales. — Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2 at 1:45 p.m. at Seydler-Hill Chapel and at 2 p.m. from the St. James Catholic Church, Gonzales, for Joe Benes. Rev. Wenzel Lieb, pastor, conducted the services with burial in the St. James Catholic Church. Pallbearers included David Kuntschik, Frank Michael, William Ray, Billy Louis and Charles Benes and Robert Jurica Jr. A rosary service was recited at the chapel at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Benes died in the Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio Tuesday, February 29, 1972 at 7:30 p.m. at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 7 days. He was born in Gonzales County. March 22, 1900, the son of Mike and Josephine (Jancek) Benes, natives of Czechoslovakia. Mr. Benes was married to Hattie Zavadil on November 11,1925. They farmed for a livelihood. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Viola) Jurica of San Antonio; one son, Wilbert Benes of Gonzales; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Annie Benes, Mrs. Frank A. (Mary) Kuntschik, both of Gonzales; and two brothers, Frank and Charlie Benes, both of Gonzales. He was preceded in death by his wife, August 31, 1946; his parents; a brother, Louis Benes, February 7, 1966.
