HATTERAS - One body has been found and the Coast Guard is continuing its search for his brother
today for a second man in Pamlico Sound, following a boating accident which
occurred about 2:40 p.m. Thursday afternoon. According to a Coast Guard
spokesman at the Cape Hatteras Coast Guard Station, the body of Velton Austin,
54, of Manteo was found yesterday. The search is coThe Coast Guard searched throughout the night without success. The search is
being conducted by boats aided by a helicopter from the Elizabeth City Coast
Guard Air Station. The two men reportedly left Hatteras on their way to Wanchese
when the boat sank suddenly just off Rollinson Channel in Pamlico Sound. Coast
Guardsmen could give no reason for the sinking which occurred 3 to 4 miles north
of Clam Shoal.

The accident was reported by operators of another motor vessel which heard a
distress call from the Austin boat. Austin's drowning was the second drowning of
the year in Dare County. A young Raleigh man drowned when his boat sank in the
Croatan Sound last weekend.

MANTEO - Velton Jones Austin, Sr., 57, of Manteo died Thursday as the result of
a boating accident in Pamlico Sound.

He was a native of Hatteras, N.C. but resided in Manteo for the past 24 years
where he was a commercial fisherman. He was a veteran of WWII having served in
the U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was the son of the late Maggie Rollinson Stowe of Manteo and the late Alpheus
B. Austin.

Other survivors include 3 sons: Velton J. Austin, Jr. of Wanchese, Alpheus
Austin of Winston-Salem and Richard Austin of Frisco; one sister, Mrs. Ada
McCarter of Manteo; one brother, Rube Austin of Pleasant Hill, California; one
grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday in Twiford's Colony Chapel in Manteo
by the Rev. Carol Daniels, pastor of the Manteo Assembly Of God Church. Burial
will follow in the Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese. (Both articles appeared in
