The fact that Peter's wife was named Catherine is known from her tombstone which is next to his, from his will and from her presence in the 1850 Census when she was living with a daughter.
All sources that have covered this family say her name was Motz (Moats), though none provide bullet-proof evidence.
If she was maiden name Motz, then most certainly she was the daughter of George Peter Motz who was the next-farm-over neighbor of Philip Mertz, Peter's father.
George wrote his will 4 Feb 1806. We can learn certain names from his will: his wife was Mary, his son was John, a son-in-law was Larents Hanes, his youngest unmarried daughters were Susanna and Barbara, his other daughters were married and in total he had 6 children.
Catherine, wife of Peter Mertz, may well have been one of the two unnamed married daughters and there is no hint of any evidence to the contrary.
Two other points support but do not prove this assertion:
1. Catherine and Peter were buried immediately behind Georgeís son John Motz at St. Peterís.
2. Catherine and Peter named a son George Peter Mertz. While the name Peter was quite common in this Mertz line, the name George was not, and the fact that it was George Peter, the name of her presumed father, is compelling.
There is a memorial for George Peter Motz in this same cemetery but Catherine is not linked to him as her father because of the fact that their relationship is not 100% proven and moreover what it says on that memorial about Casper Motz being George's father is, in my opinion, even less so a proven fact.
