John H. "Scooter" McCarter passed from this life Saturday, April 28, 2007, in Tahlequah at the age of 68 years. He was born April 29, 1938, in Pumpkin Hollow to John C. and Nancy (Dreadfulwater) McCarter.
John is preceded in death by a son, Clem Dwayne McCarter; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Shanahan; his parents, John and Nancy McCarter; and three brothers, Clem McCarter, Wilburn Eugene (Mogan) McCarter, and J.C. (Snook) McCarter.
John leaves behind his wife, Jean of the home, who he married Oct. 2, 1987; one daughter, Mary McCarter of Tahlequah; one son, David McCarter of Tahlequah; one stepson, Bob Hastings of Cookson; one stepdaughter, Suzanne Thibeault of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; one brother, D.J. McCarter and wife Frances of Tahlequah; two sisters, Willie Mae Thirsty of Stilwell and Lillie Perry of Tahlequah; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
John was a member of the Elm Tree Baptist Church. He accepted the Lord at Cedar Tree Baptist Church and was baptized in 1973. John worked as an electrician at NSU until his medical retirement in 1982. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and he loved Cherokee singing. In his younger years, John was an avid baseball player and still enjoyed watching as many games as he could.
Through his Christian faith, John actively participated in teaching future missionaries the Cherokee dialect in anticipation of their foreign missionary field languages. His former students are now missionaries in the countries of Germany, Africa, Mexico, the Philippines, and New Guinea. John will be greatly missed by his many loved ones.
Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, at Elm Tree Baptist Church, with Rev. D.J. McCarter officiating and Farrell Perry reading the obituary. Burial will follow at Cedar Tree Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Billy Hicks, Wayne Revelle, Dewayne McCarter, Junior Scrapper, Robert Soontay, and Larry Birmingham. Honorary pallbearers include Jessie Deere, Darrell Dry, Robbie McCarter, Randy McCarter, Danny McCarter, Farrell Perry, Stephen Perry, Kevin Triplett, Richard Kirkpatrick, Adam Thirsty, J.R. McCarter, Mac Vann, Leonard Brown, Frank Davis, Bill Woods, and Dave Blue. Flower girls include Vickie McCarter, Flo Swimmer, Bobbie O'Field, Sally Hicks, and Lorene Whitehead.
